Medical acupuncture needle insertion — precision meridian-based treatment by Dr James Whitfield

The approach

Evidence-based.
Whole-person.
Thorough.

Three clinical disciplines. One practitioner. A framework built to find what others have missed.

The clinical framework

Three disciplines. One framework.Nothing falls through the gaps.

Most practitioners operate within a single system. Dr Whitfield draws on three — not as philosophy, but because patients get better when you use every tool available.

01

Western Medicine

The diagnostic foundation

MBBS and FRACGP-trained clinical rigour. Comprehensive physical examination, conventional pathology interpretation, pharmaceutical management where appropriate, and the diagnostic precision that only formal medical training provides. This is the non-negotiable foundation — everything else builds on it.

Evidence-based diagnosis, conventional pathology, clinical examination

02

Functional Medicine

The investigative layer

IFM-certified methodology that goes beyond standard blood panels. DUTCH hormones, GI-MAP gut analysis, organic acids, genetic markers, advanced cardiovascular panels — the testing frameworks that reveal root causes when conventional pathology says "normal." Systems biology applied to clinical practice.

03

Meridian Medicine

The regulatory perspective

Medical acupuncture and meridian assessment add an entirely different lens to understand the body's regulatory systems. Trained through the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture, this is not traditional Chinese medicine — it's an evidence-informed approach to neuromodulation, pain management, and autonomic regulation integrated into a Western clinical framework.

The toolkit

Testing that reveals
what standard panels miss.

Every test is ordered for a reason — targeted to your presentation, not a generic panel. Costs are discussed before any tests are ordered.

DUTCH Complete

Hormones

Comprehensive dried urine hormone panel — cortisol rhythm, sex hormones, metabolites, and adrenal markers

GI-MAP

Gut

DNA-based stool analysis for pathogens, parasites, H. pylori, dysbiosis, and digestive function markers

Microba Insight

Gut

Metagenomic gut microbiome testing — species-level mapping of your microbiome composition

Organic Acids (OAT)

Metabolic

Urine metabolites revealing mitochondrial function, neurotransmitter levels, and nutritional status

Advanced Thyroid Panel

Hormones

TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, TPO antibodies — not just TSH alone

HTMA

Minerals

Hair tissue mineral analysis for heavy metal burden and mineral status over 3 months

Genetic Testing

Genomics

MTHFR, COMT, and relevant SNPs affecting methylation, detoxification, and neurotransmitter metabolism

Cardiovascular Markers

Cardio

ApoB, Lp(a), hs-CRP, advanced lipid panel — the markers that actually predict cardiovascular risk

CGM

Metabolic

Continuous glucose monitoring for real-time metabolic insight in insulin resistance and metabolic patients

The difference

What changes when your GPactually investigates.

Conventional approach

Integrative approach

Standard blood panel (10–15 markers)

Comprehensive functional pathology (50–100+ markers targeted to your presentation)

10–15 minute consultation

75-minute initial investigation with full history and meridian assessment

Symptom management with medication

Root cause identification with multi-system protocol

"Your results are normal"

"Here's what your results actually mean, and here's the plan"

Referral to separate specialists

Western medicine, functional pathology, and acupuncture coordinated by one practitioner

The patient journey

From first consult
to feeling well.

Most patients begin to feel measurably better within 8–12 weeks. Here’s what the process looks like.

Week 1

Initial consultation

75 minutes. Full history, pathology review, lifestyle and meridian assessment. You leave with a clear explanation and a testing plan.

Week 2–3

Functional testing

Targeted tests ordered based on your presentation. Results typically return within 2–3 weeks depending on the panels.

Week 4

Results and protocol

Follow-up consultation to review all results. You receive a written, personalised protocol — supplements, dietary strategy, lifestyle changes, and acupuncture scheduling if indicated.

Month 2–3

Implementation and refinement

Regular follow-ups to track progress, adjust the protocol, and address what changes as your body responds. Most patients notice meaningful shifts within 8–12 weeks.

Ongoing

Maintenance and prevention

Once the acute presentation is resolved, we shift to preventive care — periodic retesting, seasonal adjustments, and proactive monitoring to keep you well.

I’d been managing my autoimmune condition with medication for four years. Dr Whitfield addressed the root drivers and within six months my inflammatory markers had dropped significantly.
